Fishing Reports-July 30

Bow River Report – July 30, 2015

Water temperatures have been much better in the last week. However, with the latest drop in flow volume (63 cms), combined with forecast heat for the next several days, we are going to have to watch things closely again.

Dry fly fishing has been annoyingly inconsistent of late, at times we have found decent numbers of fish on Tricos early in the day and on Caddis late, but overall the fish aren’t looking up on these bugs a whole bunch.

There is starting to be a little more activity on Hoppers, especially on the cloudy days. Try something a little outlandish and use a pink bodied hopper, it’s been working pretty good. A small bead head dropper has also been working pretty well.

Deep, nymph and indicator fishing has been producing good numbers, especially in the deeper sections of the river.

Streamer fishing has been pretty good for the most part, with light colored streamers working best.

We recommend that anglers play fish as quickly as possible, not taking the fish out of the water. Until the water cools down, please skip that fish photo and get them back on their way.

High Country River Report – July 30, 2015

Everything, from the Sheep south to the border has been fishing pretty darn good. All of the east slope streams are pretty low. Terrestrials like grasshopper and ant patterns are starting to work quite well.

If you are going to the high country, it’s REALLY dry up there. Please take every precaution to prevent fire. Including where you park your vehicle!

We recommend that anglers play fish as quickly as possible, not taking the fish out of the water. Until things cool down a little please skip that fish photo and get them back on their way.

Key West Permit

Or buddy, Darren S., took some time away from his abacus to fish Key West recently.
Managed a few fish in between the thunderstorms.

And Alex P. gets his first ever Permit in Key West as well....

Maybe, for his second Permit, he'll remove some covering so we can see him smile.

Fishing Reports - July 23

Bow River Report – July 23, 2015

The cooler, rainy weather last weekend helped out a bunch with water temperatures. Where we were seeing afternoon sustained temps of 72-73F last week we are now seeing around 68F. With cooler nights and some rainy days we might make it through this low water year. The levels have come back down to around 80 cms, about the same as we saw in early July.

Even though we are seeing low and warm water the fish are in incredible shape this year. Both Browns and rainbows are nice and fat and are as hot as we have ever seen.

Streamer fishing has been the high point of late, offering almost equal success rates as deep, mid-river nymphing. Light nymphing (hopper/dropper) has been fair, and rising fish are certainly not plentiful. There are zillions of Tricos right now, but we are seeing fish up on them on small groups only. If you can find them, you’ll likely have an hour or so of pretty cool dry fly fishing.

We recommend that anglers play fish as quickly as possible, not taking the fish out of the water. Until the water cools down, please skip that fish photo and get them back on their way.

Hatches: Caddis, Tricos, Golden Stoneflies

Dry Flies: More-Or-Less Hopper-Tan or Peach, Jake’s Hi-Vis Caddis,

                   Bloom;s Sculpin Bugger, C/H R/L Bow River Bugger-White

Crowsnest River Report – July 23, 2015

Overall, the fishing on the Crow has been very good. It slowed down a little last weekend with the unstable weather but should continue on with some great fishing.

High Country River Report – July 23, 2015

Everything, from the Sheep south to the border has been fishing pretty darn good. Some of the streams in the Castle drainage are extremely low but still fishing OK. Sounds like there’s lots of Bull trout hanging around on a few of the high country streams if you need a Cutthroat break.
