Fishing Reports - July 28 Edition

Bow River Report – July 28, 2016

Clarity has improved greatly this past week and levels are fairly stable at about mid-August levels. The rains of Stampede week have left us with much improved water temperature and conditions.

Dry fly fishing has been almost non-existent for the last couple of weeks. The Caddis that were around seem to have all but disappeared. There are a LOT of Tricos though. With just a little bit more clearing we may start to see more fish up on these bugs. A little tip so you don’t have to fish impossible to see flies for Trico fish, try a small ant or CDC Caddis, the fish on the Bow will generally eat these and we can see them.

Nymphing with Stoneflies, Worm patterns, and small leeches has been very good. Yes, we said leeches, try a small leech like a Chamois Leech or Crystal Bugger under and indicator.

Streamer fishing has been good at times, but inconsistent. If it’s a cloudy day, it will likely be very good. Bright days, you will have to work at it. Last weeks cloudy days saw a lot of big fish being caught.

Crowsnest River Report – July 28, 2016

Things are getting way more technical (picky, spooky fish) on the Crowsnest, which is normal for this time of year. Levels are very low (3.2 CMS) and clear.
Fishing does continue to be quite good though. When it’s hot and sunny, you’ll likely see more bug activity early or late in the day.

Southern streams are a lot lower and warmer than the Bow and north of Calgary. Show care when releasing fish. Remember #KEEPEMWET

Fishing Reports - July 20

Bow River Report – July 20, 2016

Missed doing a fishing report last week as the official fishing report person was fishing through the hellfire and brimstone weather and dirty water.

For the first time this year we have seen 150+ flow volumes in the last week and it’s AWESOME. Since last Thursday conditions on the river have been a little tough to say the least. At times we have had as little as 2-4” visibility. Conditions should quickly improve once the torrential downpours settle down. After this push of water, once we get to 18” and better visibility, the river should experience a period of “gong show” fishing. Not sure how long it will last but we’re in for at least a few days of stellar stuff.

Below the Highwood will take a little bit to clear up. The Sheep got really gnarly the last few days.

Streamers and nymphs should produce some good numbers as this week progresses and there will likely be more fish on the bankside structures than before the rainy weather. This push of water may even get some fish in places where they’ll eat a foam bug.

We first saw Tricos on July 2 (a new record for early) and now they’re heavy. As the water clears we may see some fish up to them in the slower water. Use an Ant!

Some of you might have noticed that we haven’t been posting any fish photos. We’re still catching fish (honest) but with continued low water conditions it is the policy of CP that unless a fish is photographed in the water we will not post it. We are also refraining from photos as much as possible in favor of quicker releases.

Crowsnest River Report – July 20, 2016

The Crow wasn’t really affected by last week’s tropical rainfall amounts. It’s still running in the low to mid single digit CMS. Two nights ago they did have a big thunderstorm that colored the river but that will clear quickly. All reports from the Crow have been pretty darn good. A few have mentioned things are getting way more technical (picky, spooky fish) which is normal for this time of year.

High Country River Report – July 20, 2016

All of the high country has been fishing really well. Everything Cataract and north got a bunch of water added with heavy rains. Everything south of there not so much (some, but not as much).

The Upper Highwood will clear up pretty quick. The Sheep may take a little bit. North Country stream got really big late last week (thank goodness) and will slowly come back down through the next week or so.

Green Drakes are everywhere!
