Bow River Fishing Report - March 12

Bow River Report –March 12, 2014

Now that Old Man Winter has released his firm grip a little, a number of people have been getting out on the river. Reports from the last few days have been pretty decent, even with a little dirty water later in the days.

Nymphs are the best choice for success right now but a streamer fished slow and deep will produce as well.

There have been lots of midges on the warm afternoons this week but not much sign of fish eating them.

And be careful of the ice! It’s unstable and can be dangerous.

Hatches: Midges

Streamers: Clouser-Brown/White, Geek Leech-Purple, ¼ Pound Bugger-Olive

Nymphs: G/B Werminator, Wire Worm, Atomic Worm, WMD Stone-Dark,
B/H Prince Nymph

Dry Flies: You can take a few Griffith’s Gnats/Midge dries with you. Not sure you’ll get a chance to use them.

Saturday Seminar - March 15

14!

Kind of an intersting fish story day. In the spring of 2013, Brent Piche accompanied us on one of our shop trips to Palometa Club, in Ascension Bay. This was Brent`s very first trip to the flats. After a week of testing everything out, Bonefish, Tarpon, breaking off Permit, he spent the second last day partnered up with yours truly.

After a completely eventful day filled with two hooked and lost Permit before noon, we found this fish around mid afternoon. All alone, on a flat filled with Rays, this Permit was floating around as pretty as can be. Enough can`t be said of Brent`s patience, he threw at this fish a whole bunch of times over the course of almost an hour. Multiple, rushed fly changes, annoying charges at flies with no grab, and mostly the gradually increasing pestering from two guides and myself didn`t deter him from finally sticking this fish.

Now a first Permit is kind of a big deal. But in this case we used a common measurement formula to determine weight and his first Permit came out to a respectable 14 pounds. In addition to all the other coolness, if you look at the dark markings on the side of the fish, they are the number 14. Cool!

These marks are very random, the best and most reasonable theory I have ever heard is from Dr. Aaron Adams, of Bonefish and Tarpon Trust. he indicates that these dark marks on the side of landed Permit are stress marks caused when a fish is hooked and played. A large percentage of Permit landed have some sort of variation of these marks, but in this case it was a very accurate representation of the fish`s weight.

Global Warming!

We know you're probably just as sick of the weather as we are, and likely even more sick of hearing the bitching about it, but this is getting really old!

After the worst of it this past weekend there were several firsts....plugged in the vehicles for the very first time ever in March. Froze a water line in the house for the first time (that was a lot of fun considering pretty much every space heater in southern alberta is sold out and warming up pipes with a hair dryer in a 3 square inch space rocks!) And for the first time ever, there was strong consideration put into not getting out of bed for a 72 hour period.

Anyways, doing something like posting dry fly, flats fishing, or other cool videos is beyond nasty right now.
So, we thought the very best idea right now would be the "Shaw Fire Log". So enjoy!
