Guide Spotlight

Another guiding season is upon us and we'd like to introduce you to Jason Eggleton, shop guide and fish bum.

Here's some comments from clients:"
"Jason always works hard to make sure that we get a good shot at fish, and have an enjoyable day on the river. Jason was both knowledgeable and positive to be with. He is an interesting and talkative (without being annoying) guide who tries very hard to provide good information about the river and our prey."
-John Dundas

Also check out his trip with Andrew Penner from the Calgary Herald

Jason is a hit with clients young and old; his personality and fish finding skills are sure to impress. If your interested in a guided float trip, check out the CP website.

How to make the most out of your waders

Breathable wader; they were a god send in the eighties. Anglers looking for an escape from heat exhaustion flocked to fly shops to get a look at these new "cool" waders and would pay an arm and a leg for them.
Now an angler can pick up a pair of breathables for a reasonable price, they are the only choice for most anglers. The perks? Cooler in hot weather, lighter and more comfortable. How? Breathable membrane cloth that allows water vapor (sweat) to exit but prevents liquid water from entering (unless from over top!!!).

But to get the most out of these magnificent creations
you need to wear the right stuff under them.

HOT weather:
Lets face it, sometimes we need to wear waders in hot weather. Right now is a perfect example, for those of us with feeling in our feet, the water temp in pretty cold but the air temp can reach 30 degrees. A bit of a conundrum, freeze in the water and scorch in the sun. Wearing the right layers under those waders will help keep you cool in the heat while giving you the protection from the chilly water.
A single, light weight, wicking layer will allow sweat to move from the skin to the wader and be removed from the wader. We like the Simms Rivertek Bottom.
COLD weather:
In cold weather, layering multiple layers of varying thicknesses (all have to be wicking) will give you warmth while still maintaining "breathability".
We like to start with a next to skin light layer that will quickly remove sweat from the skin like the Simms Rivertek Bottom. Next, a heavy layer like the Simms Guide Fleece Bottom will provide warmth while still wicking moisture away. If the weather is extremely cold, additional layers can be added like a mid weight layer in between the light and heavy layers. Just make sure that all the bulky layers won`t exceed the size limitations of your waders.

Keep in mind, the same layering techniques can be used for your upper layers as well but sun protection (UPF) should also be incorporated into the fabric.

Speaking of which, make sure you have the sunscreen on today!!!

Fishing Reports July 7

Bow River Report –July 7, 2010
Dry fly fishing is kind of as good as it gets right now. Stoneflies, Caddis, and PMDs are all around. Rising fish are more abundant during cloudy conditions and fish on dry flies will come more frequently when the light is lower.

Nymph fishing has been quite good. Large Stones, Worm patterns are working well. A Chamois Leech under an indicator is very effective right now.

Streamer fishing has been good with some big fish being caught. Large, dark streamers that sink fast have been the best but on brighter day try smaller streamers.

Hatches: PMD’s, Caddis, Stoneflies.

Streamers: Bush’ Witch Doctor, Silvey’s Sculpin Leech (Black w/ Olive, White Head), Marabou Clousers, Karnopp’s Stream-A Stone, Hickman’s Party Boy

Nymphs: Fox’s Beech Creek, Morrish’s WMD (Dark Stone), Hogan’s Chubby Cousin, Bloom’s Tung Dart, Gob-O-Worms, Chamois Leech.

Dry Flies: PMD Sparkle Dun, Quill Body Parachute-PMD, Silvey’s Hatching Mayfly-PMD, Bloom’s Parachute Caddis, Bloom’s CDC Caddis, Berretts Barred Leg-Golden Stone, Neversink Stone Popper, Chubby Chernobyl.

Crowsnest River Report – July 7, 2010

The Crow has been fishing better and is dropping to the point you can cross it in a few areas. This is the prime time for the Crow, when the water is dropping and clearing. Great dry fly fishing to happy fish.

Hatches: Golden Stones, Yellow and Lime Sally Stoneflies, Caddis

Streamers: Brunette Leech, Chamois Leech.

Nymphs: Pheasant-Tail, Hare's Ear, Copper John, Tung Stud, and San Juan Worm

Dries: Berrett’s Barred Leg Stone, Neversink Caddis, Fat Albert-Black

High Country River Report – July 7, 2010
All waters continue to drop and clear. Fishing continues to improve and barring any weird weather events the next few weeks should be great.

Hatches: Stoneflies, Caddis, PMD’s

Nymphs: Fox’s Beech Creek, Morrish’s WMD (Dark Stone), Hogan’s Chubby Cousin, Bloom’s Tung Dart

Dries: Berretts Barred Leg-Golden Stone, Yummy Mummy, Neversink Stone, Neversink Caddis.

Streamers: Large Olive or White, heavily weighted patterns for Bull Trout.

New Product from Simms

Most of you have likely noticed that there's a few mosquitoes out there right now.
I tried the new Simms No Fly Zone Spray while Permit fishing this spring and it worked great. Now I'm using it here and it works really well!

You might wonder why use a different insect repellant than what you've always used. Well, if you're like me and have allergic reactions to anything with DEET, like the idea of a spray that won't eat the coatings off your fly lines, and maybe prefer something without toxic chemicals, then this is the stuff for you.
