Tuesdays Tips - Picking Your Target

Time and again I see clients who are, at very least, decent casters bonk fish right on the noggin. One of the biggest reasons (I think) for this is where we focus our eyes. Once a fish is spotted, the anglers recognizes direction of movement, distance, etc. anglers should focus on where the fly should land, not solely the fish.
If their eye is focused on the fish then that's what they're going to hit. Focus on where the fly should land and make the cast! (this is that split second where that couple hours worth of practice before the trip goes a long way).

So, that's fine and dandy, but where in tarnation should one put the fly? Well, as it was put to me a long time ago "you might start by throwing at the end that eats"
After that you might want to get a tad more technical, but not much. To present the fly to Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit, etc., there are a few things I think are a must.
**note: everything here is general, the nuances of migratory Tarpon fishing with regard to angles, etc. is much more complex. We'll save that for another day.
1-  I always want the fly in front of the fish. The fish swims into the fly.
2 - wherever possible I want the fly to cross the fishes direction of travel when it is retrieved.
The best way I have found (for me, and others seem to get it as well) to achieve these are to throw at a box, not at the fish.

To try and make sense for you, once you spot the fish, picture a 2 foot square box in front of the fish. (**this 2 foot box doesn't work for deep water, over 4 feet deep,  you need to increase the box size. This will get the fly deeper and to the fish)
Always focus, and try to land the fly on the forward, far side corner of that box from the fish. If you do this, and the fly goes where you focus, the fly will be in the perfect spot.
If you focus on the fish, you'll probably hit the fish.

Here are some examples to outline what we're talking about:

Crossing shot: fly line lands front, far side of box. Fish always sees fly. This shows left to right cross, for right to left same principle...far front of box.

Approaching Shot: fly lands forward corner of box, whichever side fish is traveling (fish going left, throw left corner, going right, right corner). **Even if a fish is coming straight at you throw to one side of the box. This will cross the fish with the fly. If you are right handed, throw to the left corner, opposite for left handed caster.

Going Away Shot: You're probably screwed, but you never know. Think of the box ahead and to the side of the fish. The fly should land in the farthest corner of the box from the fish and direction of travel. Drawings show both left to right and right to left scenarios. **If you take this shot, don't move the fly when it lands. Let the fish turn and react to the fly and then retrieve as appropriate. If you strip immediately you will likely spook the fish.
If the fish doesn't react to the fly then you chalk it up to a low percentage shot anyway and move on.

Assorted Fishing Tips - Bonefish in the Mangroves

So, you've made the cast of the month to a really nice Bonefish right in the middle of a mess of mangroves. The fish eats your fly, you strip set perfectly, and the fish proceeds to leave the country. As usual, the fish goes around as many mangrove roots as possible at somewhere around Mach 2.

What do you do? Most of us will just exert as much pressure as possible, trying to stop the Bonefish. Not going to happen...ever! Often the fish will go around enough roots, in enough different directions, until he just breaks off.

When this happens next time try this:
1) immediately drop the rod tip

2) if the fish isn't on the reel yet let it go slack, if it is on the reel quickly strip off two or three pulls of line.

3) let the fish swim with no pull on the line.

More often than not the Bonefish will immediately settle down and stop. This will allow you to move on foot, or position the skiff so that you can untangle your fly line from the mangrove roots and slowly reel in your line as you get closer to the fish. Once you get close to the fish you can resume pressure and maybe land the fish. Sometimes you may even have to repeat giving the fish slack a couple of times before you can land the fish.

Don't loosen your drag to try and accomplish this. First of all you can't mess with your drag near quick enough. Just quickly tug a couple arm lengths of line off the reel to give slack. If that isn't enough to get the fish to stop then it just wasn't meant to be. Second, if you kick the drag off and then the fish, or you, pull any line off quickly you're going to have a major birds nest on your reel.

This doesn't work every time. But it does work fairly often. It may mean having some chance where there was no chance before.

Tips and Tricks- Bonefish/Permit Leaders

It's getting to be the time of year when people are getting ready to go on their saltwater trips.
Here's a couple suggestions for your leaders for
Bonefish and Permit:

- Most of the leader manufacturers offer fluorocarbon saltwater leaders, for  Bonefish and Permit. You're best to stay away from the fluorocarbon leader. Why? Because one of the properties of fluoro is it's higher density. A fluorocarbon leader will sink horizontally, leading to the fly keeling on the bottom instead of "hopping" off the bottom on each strip. This will lead to numerous bottom and grass hookups, and snags, as well as a ton of spooked fish.

- Use a monofilament saltwater leader and replace the tippet (front 20-24") with fluorocarbon. This will fish the fly properly and give you the abrasion resistance at the tippet that you need.

The above drawing shows (top) how a mono leader/fluoro tippet will fish on the flat. The fly will pop off the bottom on strips. The bottom drawing shows how a full fluoro leader will sink. As the leader is horizontal on the bottom, the fly will drag, leading to spooked fish and snagged flies.

- Why should I use a saltwater leader? Why not freshwater stuff? The answer is simple, saltwater leaders have longer, stiffer butt sections and they are way easier to turn over in a flats environment.

- Should I make my own leaders? Certainly, most of us here at the shop build our own leaders for Bonefish and Permit. As long as you use clear, stiff, monos like Ande. If you're keen on building your own leaders, we have bulk spools of Ande Monofilament here at the shop and we can show you the proper tapers for either Bonefish or Permit.

- What length of leader should I use? For Bonefish, 10-12 foot leaders will cover pretty much anything you might encounter Bonefishing. To make things simple, we recommend the 10 foot, 12 pound Bonefish leaders. As they are mono leaders, you just add about 20-24" of fluorocarbon tippet on the end and you have a perfect Bonefish leader.

For Permit, accuracy is paramount. This is why we always recommend to people heading off to go Permit fishing that they use nothing longer than 10 foot leaders. Anything longer and the denser, heavier Permit flies can be a real challenge to turn over. Nothing more frustrating than a 12 foot leader that you can't turn over on a 60 foot cast to the Permit shot of your dreams. 10 foot!
In our opinion, the best setup for Permit is a 10 foot, 16 pound saltwater leader (mono). Cut the front 24" off the leader and replace with 16 pound Flourocarbon. (12 or 14 pound tippet may be required in certain locations and situations).

- What knot should I use for tying leaders? Tippets? We always tell people to use the knot they are comfortable tying and have confidence in. Having said that, we tie all of our own leaders, from butt to tippet, with Blood Knots. Even the tricky mono to fluoro connection. Your blood knots should have at least five wraps each way on the blood knot for mono to mono. We do 5 wraps on the mono side and 6 wraps on the fluoro side for mono to fluoro connections.

This is a wonderful opportunity to improve casting technique as well as all the little little nuances that are a part of “feeding” permit – with one of the industry’s best looking over your shoulder. Mike will also lead casting demonstrations and host evening classroom discussion (inclusive of fly tying) over happy hour margaritas. You will walk away from this trip a better angler – and with some luck a few fly caught permit to hand.

About Mike Gifford:
Mike was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta and is the owner operator of Country Pleasures Fly Shop. He has been guiding on the Bow River since the mid 1980’s, and fished the saltwater flats from Christmas Island to Cuba 8-10 weeks a year during that time. Mike has 99 permit on the fly to his name; most of which were caught with Palometa Club guides right here on Ascension Bay. In addition to seasonally managing the Palometa Club, Mike hosts 2-3 groups of our Canadian friends each season. He is a close friend to our entire lodge and guide staff – and has spent as much time on Ascension Bay as any gringo around over the past decade.

MIND BOGGLING SUMMER MINI-SEASON FISHING REPORT

We will let the report posted on the Simms Fishing Products Blog do most of the talking – but it is safe to say you will add summertime fishing on the Yucatan to the short list. Rance Rathie, co-owner of Patagonia River Guides in Argentina, along with his childhood best buddy, Jason Miller, rewrote the record books this summer. While wrapping up the Rathie family summer vacation in Punta Allen at the Palometa Club, Rance and Jason put the hurt on the Ascension Bay permit population with 14 NICE fish in two days of fishing with Aaron and Christian. Not to shabby for a couple of Madison County Montana boys! Subsequent weeks that followed shared similar success with MANY multi-permit days, big tarpon, and endless volumes of bonefish.

The summertime is an excellent time to see huge schools of permit enjoying little molestation from competing lodges and very few anglers on the Bay. While you are always rolling the dice with Mother Nature during the rainy storm season, paying a visit to the Club in the summertime can yield huge dividends. We will again be open from late July through early September 2016. Some space still remains for our second annual summer mini-season.

Make sure to check out the report from Rance and Jason from the Simms Wading Room and be prepared to have your socks knocked off: CLICK FOR REPORT

SIGHTCAST - LOS ROQUES, VENEZUELA
*JANUARY 17-24, 2015

Technically an atoll within the Lesser Antilles, the Los Roques' fly fishing region is made up of more than 300 cays, with a vast diversity of saltwater habitats including magnificent coral beds, grass and hard sand flats, pristine beaches, and remarkable "pancake" flats. Better yet, nearly all of the flats fishing is done while wading. While the area abounds with tarpon, barracuda, and jacks, it is the world-class bonefishing that draws anglers back year after year.

Similar to Christmas Island, Los Roques is blessed with consistent weather and water temperatures, not to mention high fish counts. Bonefish average 4 pounds with numerous fish in the 6 to 10 pound class. Meals and accommodations at Acuarela Lodge are greatly enjoyed by anglers and discerning non-anglers alike. For anglers who love flats fishing and to wade fish for high numbers of good sized bonefish, Los Roques is truly one of the finest flats fishing destinations in the world today. Stays of varying lengths are available. Chris Yrazabal, owner of Sight Cast, is a fourteen-year veteran to guiding the Los Roques region

Black Fly Trip Report

We just returned from 2 weeks at Black Fly Lodge in Abaco, Bahamas this past weekend. This year we did two seperate, back to back, hosted weeks. Our first group arrived at BF on March 29, fishing the subsequent 6 days. Our arrival coincided with the tail end of some pretty awful weather that they had been experiencing for a few days. This resulted in our first two days being kind of a fight with light (or lack thereof).

After the first couple of days, Mother Nature started to look more kindly upon us with more sunlight and stable weather patterns. Fishing improved right along with the weather. A couple of double digit Bonefish were landed during the week with quite a number of fish 5 pounds and over landed. One of our group, who we`ll just refer to as "Lucky Les", continued his Black Fly tradition of losing a couple of truly huge Bonefish.

Everyone thinks of Bonefish when the Bahamas are mention but Abaco is a very viable Permit fishery with some huge specimens kicking around. Five Permit were landed in our first week with one fish lost. One of the Permit came in at around 40 pounds.

The meals were maybe better than last year, which we would have never thought possible. Oh, and they still hold the title for best fishing lodge beds and showers in the world!

Our second week saw a continuation of very nice weather to start. I had the privelege of fishing with an old friend who is enjoying his first year of retirement. We had some pretty decent Bonefishing with shots at some very big fish.
Mid-week brought us a present from the north in the form of cloud, high wind, and dropping temps. Wednesday we headed out with expectations of a very pleasnat boat ride and horrible fishing. All of us ended up getting a ton of shot at big Bonefish. Unfortunately, they were the most uninterested fish I think I have ver seen. Fly reactions ranged from complete disinterest to absolute panic. Obviously it was a head scratcher.

As an added bonus, there were a ton of shots at tailing Mutton Snapper in very skinny water. tailing Muttons pretty much put Permit to shame in the spooky/difficult department.

The last few days brought improvement and the last day saw unbelievable Bonefishing. And just to top things off, there was a 4:05 PM, just about ready to quit, last cast Permit landed...perfect!

Great big thanks to SD, DP, TS, LG, and TH (you all know who you are). And a big thanks to whole cast and crew at Black Fly!

Mark your calendar for April 18-25, 2015! We're going back!

Palometa Club

It's Friday, June 3, and I'm sitting in the courtyard of my hotel in Cancun. I've just finished 6 days fishing at the Palometa Club in Punta Allen, Mexico.

Operated by Dick and Kaye Cameron, "the club" is an absolute treat. I came down to see their operation with the hopes of adding it as a destination for the shop for 2012 as a prime Permit destination, with lots of "Plan B" options in the form of Bonefish, Tarpon, and Snook. What I found is better than I had expected......

View from the bar and patio at Palometa Club

Upon my arrival, one of the first things that struck me is the homier, more comfortable setting compared to most lodges. Dick and Kaye operate the club form the beginning of January to mid-June every season, spending the balance o the year in Juneau, Alaska. The staff, guides, and the Camerons are very much like a close knit family, most being with the lodge since their opening in 2006.

Rooms are very comfortable and roomy.
The guides are, in their entirety, excellent. I would fish with any of them, any day, any time. P.C. does the guiding a little differently, with two guides per boat. This means that when in the boat one guide is poling and the second guide is a second pair of eyes as well as providing assistance with the anglers fly line, etc.
Most of the Permit shots are taken out the Panga after the fish is spotted, so the second guide will take the angler out of the boat on foot. The guide on the poling platform will then provide a "high sight" assistance" from a safe distance.

A lifetimes worth of Permit flats await.

THIS IS A TARGET RICH ENVIRONMENT! You will get more than enough Permit shots (the longest period I went without a shot was no more than about 45 minutes). Lots of very happy, tailing Permit from about 10 pounds to mid 30 pound range will await you. Palometa Club has some of the coolest backcountry fishing I have seen, with Tarpon from 10 to 50 pounds in abundance, with the occasional much larger fish. In addition, there seemed to be Snook all over the place, you could spend a bunch of time just fishing for Snook. The lodge best Snook is 28 pounds, the largest I saw was somewhere between 15 and 20. Lots of Bonefish, the largest I saw was around 5 or 6 pounds. Their Bonefish are very heavy for their length, heavier even than some of the Cuba Bonefish. There is also opportunities, albeit not as consistent, to see 100+ pound Tarpon out on the open flats.

Backcountry for Snook and Tarpon

I would give Palometa Club top grades. For more information, go to http://www.countrypleasures.com/palometa_club.htm

Christmas Island

After a couple of years off, Country Pleasures is doing another trip to Christmas Island.
We took a little break when there was no jet service to the island but all is back and running.

This is a very reasonably priced trip compared to a lot of others around the world and is a very "target rich environment" for Bonefish and Trevally.

The trip will be at Christmas from November 8-15, 2011. This will offer us the monthly cycle of the largest Bonefish coming up on certain flats following the full moon.

CP first started going to Christmas Island in 1986 and no shop in Canada knows this destination better than we do!

Perfect for the seasoned flats angler or the first time flats angler!
Give us a call or send us an e-mail for more information.

2010 Year In Review

Over the last year several CP customers caught some pretty nice fish on our trips. Just a quick "grip and grin" salute to them.

We had quite a number of customers achieve a Grand Slam in 2010. Some their first, some not.
A Grand Slam is when an angler catches 3 species consisting of a Permit, a Tarpon, a Bonefish, Snook, or Mutton Snapper in the same day ( I know, most of you know that, but some don't).
Here are a few (most photos of the Permit, that's the hard one!)

John Bonin with the Permit from one of his Grand Slams. I think this was also a Super Slam (Permit, Bonefish, tarpon, and Snook in the same day)
Mike Schaalje, not his first Permit hooked but first landed.

Dave Addie....Dave actually hooks more Permit than any six anglers, it's amazing. Only problem is he is continuously figuring out new ways for them to come unbuttoned.

Greg Moffat's first Permit and GS. He was a little happy, calling me on the skiff radio to tell me all about it.

Steve Doolan with his first Permit and Grand Slam. He caught this fish within a half hour of Greg Moffat, his skiff partner catching a Permit. Not bad for a morning.

Eugen Helzl, the Austrian fishin' machine.

Dave Pryce, not his first Permit but his first GS. I got to watch this one, he was my skiff partner. I like to watch!

Sean Furlong giving us his "No Big Deal, Is my shirt pressed?, How's my hair?" look.

It was pretty cool being around for all of these. The "first time Permit" were great, the grins never get old.

There was a whole bunch of other cool stuff that went on around the world on our trips in 201o. we'll have more coming.
