Fishing Reports-August 5

Bow River Report – August 5, 2015

After a week of nervously watching water temperatures and levels, the storm events of Tuesday provided a welcome relief. The large amounts of hail that fell in the city will be very helpful.
If we get the continued cloudy, cooler days at the end of this week, fishing should get a bunch better.

Fishing of late has consisted mostly of streamer fishing, which has produced some very nice fish. Not a lot of them, but some nice big fish.

Heavier nymph rigs have also produced well if fished in the deeper, mid-river structures.

For those who have stuck with it, there’s been the odd fish up on Hopper patterns. Kind of have to focus on bars and riffles. The best success has been on structures that are more mid-river. With the warm water, there hasn’t been many fish on the banks. That will hopefully improve with some cooler water.

We recommend that anglers play fish as quickly as possible, not taking the fish out of the water. Until the water cools down, please skip that fish photo and get them back on their way.

Hatches: Tricos, Caddis, Hoppers

Dry Flies: More-Or-Less Hopper-Pink, Jake’s Hi-Vis Caddis,

                   Olive/White/Black, Party Boy-Black, Bloom;s Sculpin Bugger,
                   C/H R/L Bow River Bugger-White

Crowsnest River Report – August 5, 2015

Crowsnest is really low, clear, and warm. Mornings and evenings have been fishing best.

We recommend that anglers play fish as quickly as possible, not taking the fish out of the water. Until things cool down a little please skip that fish photo and get them back on their way.

High Country River Report – August 5, 2015

Everything, from the Sheep south to the border has been fishing pretty darn good. All of the east slope streams are pretty low. Terrestrials like grasshopper and ant patterns are starting to work quite well.

A lot of the east slope streams got some moisture on Tuesday, including hail, which should help with water temperatures.

We recommend that anglers play fish as quickly as possible, not taking the fish out of the water. Until things cool down a little please skip that fish photo and get them back on their way.

Hatches:  Caddis, PMD’s, Green Drakes, Hoppers, Ants

Dries: Comparadun-PMD, Berrett’s Emerging Green Drake, Morrish Hopper, Mongo Hopper, Two-Tone Para Ant, Fire Beetle

Nymphs: B/H Pheasant Tail, B/H R/L Hares Ear, Rubberleg Copper John

Streamers:   Sleech-Pink, Circus Peanut-Tan, Medusa-Fleshy

Mother Nature's Fix

A lot of you are likely aware that, on a few occasions this summer, we have been at critical levels for water temperature on the Bow River. The last of these cycles occurred through the second half of last week and through the long weekend. Temperatures of 71F-73F were showing up all over the place on the river below Calgary.

The weather events of yesterday afternoon and evening, most notably the large amounts of hail in the city, will certainly give the river an essential cool down that was much needed. Several square blocks of 6" deep hail, in the downtown core alone, entering the river will be a big help.

Tuesday's storm rolling in.

This should mean for improved fishing over the next while. However, we are not out of the woods yet, anglers should still adhere to good practices of playing fish quickly, keeping them in the water, and taking extra time to make sure they are revived after landing.

If the forecast for this week holds true, we will be in a much better situation for the next little while, but the long range forecast calls for more sunny and warm. Until we see the cooler, and longer, nights of later August we aren't out of the woods.

But in the short term, yesterdays storms were a godsend.

Fish Photos

A few photos of fish, caught by guided clients this past week. We haven't been posting too many of these as we have been recommending not taking photos of fish out of the water with water temperatures being warmer. All of these were either on cooler days, or early in the day in the city with temperatures not exceeding 65F.
Bow River triple. One angler with two fish at once, other angler with one.

Dan K., with a nice, 23" yellow.

Graeme D., with a slab of Bow River silver.

Mary C., with one of many that day.
