Palometa Club 4th Annual Permit Tournament Recap

Headed off to the P.C. Permit Tournament, their 4th annual, during the first week of April. This is a non-serious event to raise funds for the Punta Allen school as well as Bonefish Tarpon Trust.

This year saw a few new faces. We finally got John and Danny from Hatch Reels to join us this year. Overall, the general consensus was that this year saw the highest level of angler ability of any of the tourneys. Heck, we even had a Permit guide from Placencia, Belize who was paired up with a fellow from California who fishes for Permit somewhere around 70 days a year. To flange up with this great group, we once again had 16 of the best Permit guides I know of.

 As usual, the first two days of the week are "fun' days where we partner up with different people who aren't our tournament partners. Got to fish with a couple really good guys, Will and Schuyler.
For the four tournament days, David Leake, from Tailwaters in Dallas was once again stuck with me as none of his better choices were able to make it. In between Permit fishing, I provide David with a non-stop stream of Canadian style humor and general babble.

The guy in the photo to the right, Schuyler Marshall, took home big fish honors with a 30 pound Permit (he says 29.6 or something, it's 30!)

 Possibly due to the fact that there were some seriously good anglers this year, there were a lot more Permit landed at this years tournament. One day saw 11 landed, with 24 total for the week. And there were a number of fish lost as well. I accounted for three of those lost fish. Seemed to be going through some sort of "thing". I don't think I had lost three Permit in the last 2 or 3 years. Oh well.

The sponsors made this years tournament the best ever for the amount, and quality of prizes. Hatch reels all over the place, rods, bags, artwork by Paul Puckett, lots of very cool stuff.
You could buy a bunch of Punta Allen with what the reels that Hatch donates are worth. And the rest of the sponsors are just as generous. Thanks to you all!

Of course, none of this stuff would happen, including raising the funds for the town school and B.T.T., without the efforts of Dick and Kaye Cameron, David Leake, Fina, Rosie, Maribel, Gloria, Carlos, Coli, Manny, Luis, and all 16 of the best bunch of Permit hunting devils (no, not the fishermen, the guides!) ever to haunt the Caribbean. Thanks to all of you.

We hope that this message finds everyone doing fantastic and enjoying the arrival of cooler autumn weather! Just wanted to check in and pass along some news as well as some enticing fall season promotions. We can also get creative with arrival and departure days this time of year if you have specific dates you need to target that fall outside of our normal Friday-Friday program.

MIKE GIFFORD PERMIT SCHOOL (JANUARY 8-15, 2016

If you have ever wanted to become a more effective permit angler now is your chance! Three (3) anglers will spend a week fishing with our resident permit assassin and professional casting instructor, Mike Gifford, from Country Pleasures Fly Shop in Calgary, Alberta. Students will enjoy private rooms and will fish solo for 4 days and with Mike for 2 days. This is a wonderful opportunity to improve casting technique as well as all the little little nuances that are a part of “feeding” permit – with one of the industry’s best looking over your shoulder. Mike will also lead casting demonstrations and host evening classroom discussion (inclusive of fly tying) over happy hour margaritas. You will walk away from this trip a better angler – and with some luck a few fly caught permit to hand.

About Mike Gifford:
Mike was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta and is the owner operator of Country Pleasures Fly Shop. He has been guiding on the Bow River since the mid 1980’s, and fished the saltwater flats from Christmas Island to Cuba 8-10 weeks a year during that time. Mike has 99 permit on the fly to his name; most of which were caught with Palometa Club guides right here on Ascension Bay. In addition to seasonally managing the Palometa Club, Mike hosts 2-3 groups of our Canadian friends each season. He is a close friend to our entire lodge and guide staff – and has spent as much time on Ascension Bay as any gringo around over the past decade.

MIND BOGGLING SUMMER MINI-SEASON FISHING REPORT

We will let the report posted on the Simms Fishing Products Blog do most of the talking – but it is safe to say you will add summertime fishing on the Yucatan to the short list. Rance Rathie, co-owner of Patagonia River Guides in Argentina, along with his childhood best buddy, Jason Miller, rewrote the record books this summer. While wrapping up the Rathie family summer vacation in Punta Allen at the Palometa Club, Rance and Jason put the hurt on the Ascension Bay permit population with 14 NICE fish in two days of fishing with Aaron and Christian. Not to shabby for a couple of Madison County Montana boys! Subsequent weeks that followed shared similar success with MANY multi-permit days, big tarpon, and endless volumes of bonefish.

The summertime is an excellent time to see huge schools of permit enjoying little molestation from competing lodges and very few anglers on the Bay. While you are always rolling the dice with Mother Nature during the rainy storm season, paying a visit to the Club in the summertime can yield huge dividends. We will again be open from late July through early September 2016. Some space still remains for our second annual summer mini-season.

3rd Annual Palometa Club Permit Tournament

Tailwaters Travel and The Palometa Club recently hosted the 3rd Annual Palometa Club Permit Tournament, April 10-17. The Palometa Club once again teamed up with Patagonia Clothing Company and Hatch Reels as the lead sponsors for the annual event to benefit the Jon Ain Fund at Bonefish Tarpon Trust as well as the schoolchildren of Punta Allen, Mexico. 

The event raised over $6000 in charitable proceeds from the entry fees, calcutta, and individual donations!
