We hope that this message finds everyone doing fantastic and enjoying the arrival of cooler autumn weather! Just wanted to check in and pass along some news as well as some enticing fall season promotions. MIKE GIFFORD PERMIT SCHOOL (JANUARY 8-15, 2016

If you have ever wanted to become a more effective permit angler now is your chance! Three (3) anglers will spend a week fishing with our resident permit assassin and professional casting instructor, Mike Gifford, from Country Pleasures Fly Shop in Calgary, Alberta. Students will enjoy private rooms and will fish solo for 4 days and with Mike for 2 days. This is a wonderful opportunity to improve casting technique as well as all the little little nuances that are a part of “feeding” permit – with one of the industry’s best looking over your shoulder. Mike will also lead casting demonstrations and host evening classroom discussion (inclusive of fly tying) over happy hour margaritas. About Mike Gifford:
Mike was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta and is the owner operator of Country Pleasures Fly Shop. He has been guiding on the Bow River since the mid 1980’s, and fished the saltwater flats from Christmas Island to Cuba 8-10 weeks a year during that time. Mike has 99 permit on the fly to his name; most of which were caught with Palometa Club guides right here on Ascension Bay. In addition to seasonally managing the Palometa Club, Mike hosts 2-3 groups of our Canadian friends each season. He is a close friend to our entire lodge and guide staff – and has spent as much time on Ascension Bay as any gringo around over the past decade.

MIND BOGGLING SUMMER MINI-SEASON FISHING REPORT

We will let the report posted on the Simms Fishing Products Blog do most of the talking – but it is safe to say you will add summertime fishing on the Yucatan to the short list. Rance Rathie, co-owner of Patagonia River Guides in Argentina, along with his childhood best buddy, Jason Miller, rewrote the record books this summer. While wrapping up the Rathie family summer vacation in Punta Allen at the Palometa Club, Rance and Jason put the hurt on the Ascension Bay permit population with 14 NICE fish in two days of fishing with Aaron and Christian. Not to shabby for a couple of Madison County Montana boys! Subsequent weeks that followed shared similar success with MANY multi-permit days, big tarpon, and endless volumes of bonefish.

The summertime is an excellent time to see huge schools of permit enjoying little molestation from competing lodges and very few anglers on the Bay. While you are always rolling the dice with Mother Nature during the rainy storm season, paying a visit to the Club in the summertime can yield huge dividends. We will again be open from late July through early September 2016. Some space still remains for our second annual summer mini-season.

SIGHTCAST - LOS ROQUES, VENEZUELA

Technically an atoll within the Lesser Antilles, the Los Roques' fly fishing region is made up of more than 300 cays, with a vast diversity of saltwater habitats including magnificent coral beds, grass and hard sand flats, pristine beaches, and remarkable "pancake" flats. Better yet, nearly all of the flats fishing is done while wading. While the area abounds with tarpon, barracuda, and jacks, it is the world-class bonefishing that draws anglers back year after year.

Similar to Christmas Island, Los Roques is blessed with consistent weather and water temperatures, not to mention high fish counts. Palometa Club Trip Report

Palometa Club 2013 Opening Week January 4-11, 2013

Darren Soice and I arrived at the club on January 4 with Dick, who just got back from Alaska, to herald in the start of the 2013 season.

After a relaxed evening of setting up our gear and Dick looking for things that needed addressing to get the lodge up and running (Kaye had done everything before her departure at the end of the fall season), we all retired early in anticipation of our week.

Our first three days saw reasonable winds of around 16-18 knots but we fought with cloud a bunch. Even with that, under the ever impressive supervision of Korreano/Tony, Alonso/Fabian, and Julio/Gerardo, we managed to find a few Permit here and there. Most importantly, we managed to stick a few in the face and put some flags on the pole every day.

Day 4 was absolutely perfect. Almost cloudless, with around 18 knot winds from the south-southeast, we were able to see a lot more Permit in these conditions. Darren had a great day, with 2 Permit to the boat and after several hours of psychological breakdown on my part, I also managed to land a respectable fish as well. I’m pretty certain that Julio, Gerardo, and Darren were much more excited about this fish as it ended a couple hours of reflective silence, a self imposed “benching” on myself, and a certainty on my part that I should maybe stayed in bed that day.

Days 5 and 6 were not kind in the form of almost 100% cloud cover and diabolical wind speeds. Wednesday we woke up, saw that the sun would likely not make an appearance that day and the wind was dirtying the bay. So rather than forcing the issue, Alonso took us way back into the bay where the fresh water bubbles through the stone in channels and lagoons to give life to Ascension. Had a great day, chasing Tarpon all morning and then, after lunch, having an awesome time with Snook until it was time to head back to the club.

The last day was pretty much the same, so after consultation with Korreano and Tony, we headed off on the slightly extended ride to the backcountry lagoons and channels of Santa Rosa. This proved to be a great decision as well. We had a fabulous day of Baby Tarpon fishing with targets being available pretty much non-stop throughout the day. A whole whack of fish jumped, a lot less boated, it was one of the more enjoyable days I have had in a while and Darren just never stopped grinning.

So, once again, we headed home (not wanting to leave) completely impressed with the hospitality of Dick and Kaye, the unique resource they possess in their staff and guides, and this spectacular fishery!

Palometa Club - November 16-23

The gang, led by Kevin Peterson all got back from The Palometa Club a couple weeks ago. Took us a while to get a report up and not everyone has sent us their pictures. Curtis and Jen B. were very prompt with their photos so we'll post them.

Weather for the week wasn't perfect. The first day was absolutely stunning and Curtis hooked 3 Permit. The rest of the week was kind of a mix some decent weather, some not so good with cloud being the hated enemy.

Even with a little instability, everyone had a bunch of quality shots at Permit every day. When they weren't messing with the Permit, Bonefish, Snook, and Tarpon were the order of the day.

Sounds like Kevin and Raza had some issues with Permit being hooked and then things going awry. That is the nature of the beast. Kev continues to be infatuated, and haunted, by the nasty critters.

The biggest news for us was that Jen B., on only her second trip ever flats fishing, hooked a Permit later in the week. Couldn't happen to a nicer person. Sounds like in between looking for Permit she laid a sound licking on the Bonefish of Ascension Bay.

Most of the party were first timers and once again everyone came back raving about the guides, the lodge, Kaye (Dick was still in Alaska), the food, and all of the staff. It is a pretty cool place...that just happens to be infested with Permit!

Another Intrepid Angler Report

Good friend, customer, and a very good angler, John Bonin,

was down fishing with John Kipp in the Keys recently.

he sent us these shots of a VERY nice Snook....

 In the words of Capt. Kipp:

"This fish was swimming with his back out of the water right down the very edge of the mangrove roots. That is probably the trickiest scenario as far as presentation goes. The angler must slide the fly in under the mangrove branches but just short of the roots. This is a one shot deal. There are no second casts. John ma...de it happen and the snook exploded and immediately tried to give us the rootie-toot-toot by charging directly through the barnacle encrusted roots. Luckily, John had his wits about him and did the only thing he could do to save the fish - and that was to bail out. It reminded me of the 101st Airborne over Normandy. He managed to disentangle the fish from the maze of roots and get him in the net. Usually that situation results in a lost fish. This time it worked out. It's something we'll always have to reminisce about. "

2010 Year In Review

Over the last year several CP customers caught some pretty nice fish on our trips. Just a quick "grip and grin" salute to them.

We had quite a number of customers achieve a Grand Slam in 2010. Some their first, some not.

A Grand Slam is when an angler catches 3 species consisting of a Permit, a Tarpon, a Bonefish, Snook, or Mutton Snapper in the same day ( I know, most of you know that, but some don't).

Here are a few (most photos of the Permit, that's the hard one!)

Mike Schaalje, not his first Permit hooked but first landed.

Dave Addie....Dave actually hooks more Permit than any six anglers, it's amazing. Only problem is he is continuously figuring out new ways for them to come unbuttoned.

Greg Moffat's first Permit and GS. He was a little happy, calling me on the skiff radio to tell me all about it.

Steve Doolan with his first Permit and Grand Slam. He caught this fish within a half hour of Greg Moffat, his skiff partner catching a Permit. Not bad for a morning.

It was pretty cool being around for all of these. The "first time Permit" were great, the grins never get old.
