Spring Steelhead Opportunities with Nicholas Dean Lodge

There's a few open dates for the Spring Steelhead Fishery at Nicholas Dean Lodge in Terrace BC.

This trip is a great introduction to some of the most aggressive spring fish in the world, as well as a perfect trip for the experienced angler. On the multitude of river's available , you'll swing large bugs for some of the largest steelhead of the year. Since these fish are of the same year class as of the 2010 run, this could be a run that we'll talk about for a very long time.


You'll also get to fish some of the coolest, most intimate coastal streams. Some of these rivers don't require a long cast or a huge mend, and can offer some of the largest fish of the year.



You'll stay at the Yellow Cedar Lodge, a spectacular facility located on the banks of the famed Skeena,just West of Terrace. Along with the gourmet cooking of Red Seal chef Alf Leslie, The lodge features a mixture of private single and double bedrooms, a bar and games room. It also includes a lounge, gym and cardio equipment room, sauna, hot tub, wrap around porch, and a large dining area and bar for sharing daily fishing stories! This is possibly the prettiest lodge in Northern BC.

Spring Steelhead in Terrace BC

While most think of steelheading on the Skeena as a purely fall pursuit, the spring season on the Skeena tributaries is possibly my favorite.Here's a few reasons why.

.You get to fish some REALLY cool water: A lot of the tiny coastal streams do not see a fall run of steelhead, and thus do not get the publicity of the famous rivers. On the lesser known rivers, you may never run into another angler for weeks at a time, and still have the best fishing of your life. The scenery will blow your mind as well.

However, the fish in these rivers (and creeks) can be some of the biggest of the year, and are typically very aggressive to the fly. There is also no commercial fishing at the time on the Skeena, and thus increasing your odds.

.
. Hot fish. Most of the spring fish are in and out of their spawning streams in relatively little time, and aren't traveling hundreds of kilometers before you encounter them. They fight as hard as any we've encountered.

You might just run into one of these guys. The vast majority of the Skeena's monster kings travel to the Kalum river, and are a welcome bycatch to steelhead.

Nicholas Dean runs out of the Yellow Cedar Lodge. We've been lucky enough to spend a few nights here, and it is an absolutely stunning locale and operation.

There are a few openings for some dates in April at Nicholas Dean, and they are very affordable. This is a perfect place to introduce yourself (and become addicted) to steelheading.

Steelhead Report from Skeena Country

Got a report back from good friend of the shop, Scott R., who was fishing the Bulkley and Morice this past week. Water temps were around 11-13 degrees. Clarity was good on sunday, while overnight rains Tue-Wed decreased vis during week to a low of 1-1.5ft for Thursday. Some dry fly action Sunday, rest of week required sink tips and rabbit/marabou flies.

All fish were fresh and hot.

While he didn't have any steelhead photos to send me, most anglers who have fished by themselves understand the difficulty in getting a photo of a steelhead without a helping hand. Thanks Scott!
