SIGHTCAST - LOS ROQUES, VENEZUELA
*JANUARY 17-24, 2015

Technically an atoll within the Lesser Antilles, the Los Roques' fly fishing region is made up of more than 300 cays, with a vast diversity of saltwater habitats including magnificent coral beds, grass and hard sand flats, pristine beaches, and remarkable "pancake" flats. Better yet, nearly all of the flats fishing is done while wading. While the area abounds with tarpon, barracuda, and jacks, it is the world-class bonefishing that draws anglers back year after year.

Similar to Christmas Island, Los Roques is blessed with consistent weather and water temperatures, not to mention high fish counts. Bonefish average 4 pounds with numerous fish in the 6 to 10 pound class. Meals and accommodations at Acuarela Lodge are greatly enjoyed by anglers and discerning non-anglers alike. For anglers who love flats fishing and to wade fish for high numbers of good sized bonefish, Los Roques is truly one of the finest flats fishing destinations in the world today. Black Fly Trip Report

We just returned from 2 weeks at Black Fly Lodge in Abaco, Bahamas this past weekend.This year we did two seperate, back to back, hosted weeks. Our first group arrived at BF on March 29, fishing the subsequent 6 days. Our arrival coincided with the tail end of some pretty awful weather that they had been experiencing for a few days. This resulted in our first two days being kind of a fight with light (or lack thereof).

After the first couple of days, Mother Nature started to look more kindly upon us with more sunlight and stable weather patterns. Fishing improved right along with the weather. A couple of double digit Bonefish were landed during the week with quite a number of fish 5 pounds and over landed. One of our group, who we`ll just refer to as "Lucky Les", continued his Black Fly tradition of losing a couple of truly huge Bonefish.

Everyone thinks of Bonefish when the Bahamas are mention but Abaco is a very viable Permit fishery with some huge specimens kicking around. Five Permit were landed in our first week with one fish lost. One of the Permit came in at around 40 pounds.

The meals were maybe better than last year, which we would have never thought possible. Oh, and they still hold the title for best fishing lodge beds and showers in the world!

Our second week saw a continuation of very nice weather to start. I had the privelege of fishing with an old friend who is enjoying his first year of retirement. We had some pretty decent Bonefishing with shots at some very big fish.

Mid-week brought us a present from the north in the form of cloud, high wind, and dropping temps. Wednesday we headed out with expectations of a very pleasnat boat ride and horrible fishing. All of us ended up getting a ton of shot at big Bonefish. Unfortunately, they were the most uninterested fish I think I have ver seen. Fly reactions ranged from complete disinterest to absolute panic. Obviously it was a head scratcher.

As an added bonus, there were a ton of shots at tailing Mutton Snapper in very skinny water. tailing Muttons pretty much put Permit to shame in the spooky/difficult department.

The last few days brought improvement and the last day saw unbelievable Bonefishing. And just to top things off, there was a 4:05 PM, just about ready to quit, last cast Permit landed...perfect!

Black Fly Lodge Report

We just returned from our inaugural trip to Black Fly Lodge, Abaco, Bahamas on April 13. Some of you may have seen our review/report from our scouting trip last year in which we spoke very highly of Black Fly. However, it's always a better test when we have clients along to judge a lodge and fishery.

Vaughn and Jean Cochran, Clint Kemp, and Dave Byler (the owners of Black Fly Lodge) set out to do something different and special at Black Fly and have, without question, succeeded. The foundation of their operation lies in a very special fishery. A truly world class bonefishery exists here with Bonefish as big as you'll find anywhere. In addition, they have a very viable Permit fishery that not a lot of people talk much about, with some very large Permit. Add to this some Tarpon, a good bunch of tailing Mutton Snapper, and a massive amount of available real estate that they fish and you have something pretty unique.

Last year I stayed in their temporary lodge, which was great, but this year we stayed in the newly opened lodge. WOW! This place is truly amazing. Indicative of the classic sporting lodges of days gone by, you can almost picture Hemingway wandering the halls. A wonderful staff, managed by Clint Kemp, finishes everything off with a level of service you don't find just anywhere. The meals (even the skiff lunches) are simply amazing. Head Chef, Devon, is very talented with the rest of the staff (Samantha and Elizabeth) make sure your stay is as close to perfect as possible.
All ten in the group raved every night about the wonderful dinners and it's one of the only trips I have been on where I gained a few pounds.

The specially designed East Cape skiffs turned out very well. Not only are they the most comfortable and dry skiff I have ever run in, they are awesome to fish from. They run very skinny, meaning we can fish pretty much anything we want, and they can pull away from a dead stop in very little water. The deck is a dream. Very clean with nothing to catch fly lines and BIG! Anglers also have the option of a clear deck, a combination brace/folding seat, or a raised standing platform. Fly line tamer buckets are one every skiff (which, as it turns out, I quite like, unlike the brace thingy). Clients do like the brace/seat option. Skiffs are kept in immaculate condition with a maintenance regime and cleaning performed every night.

The guides, Paul, Derreck, Nick, Kirk are top-notch. These guys are as good as it gets! They are very dialed in, personable, professional, the whole package. Every single angler in our group loved them. They aren't just Bonefish guides either. They know their Permit fishery, the Tarpon, Mutton Snapper, etc. I would fish with any of these four, any day, any time...period. They rock!

We had non-anglers in our party and Black Fly was perfect for them. They had stuff to do every day, touring all over the place, and had a great time. This is one of the very few fishing lodges where you can safely take a non-fishing companion.

Clint is quickly developing a working knowledge of the bluewater fishery as well, so non-anglers can go give that a try on conventional tackle and those who are anglers can give Dorado, Tuna, Sailfish, etc. a try on the fly. The have a 32 foot Yellowfin for this application which is a very nice setup.

Well, we could go on and on, but to sum things up....Black Fly is a top notch operation! And will we go back? Without question!
