While we have a number of products in store, here's a couple of quick reviews of the ones we've had a chance to use ourselves.
Loggerhead Long-sleeve Shirt
To begin, this shirt looks awesome. It's styled well, great colors and accents but it shines when you put it on. A UPF 45 keeps the sun off, a buttoned collar allows a little breathing room and some extra ventilation. The seams are set off-shoulder so there's no itching or chaffing, thumb holes in the cuffs and a handy zippered pocket at the lower back with a sun-glass cleaning cloth built in (haven't tested the cloth itself yet for glass cleaning). Like all its polyester competitors, this isn't a shirt I would wear tromping through heavy bush since the material can pull a bit but once you put it on, seriously, you won't want to take it off. Brent took it piking last week, and raved for days about it!
Bruja Surf Short
The first time you touch this material, you will understand why we love them so much. It's a super soft, lightweight polyester microfiber that wicks and is quick-dry. The waist is a draw-string and button-fly. The outseam is 20" for a 33" waist hitting right above the knee or so. There is only one rear pocket but its Howler's own firewall flap pocket which when buttoned nearly erases the chances of losing something. If nothing else, these shorts deserve a try-on. Also a new favorite of Brent's.
T-Shirts
We have a number of styles of Howler shirts. The first thing that struck me is the fabric, it's ultra-soft ring spun cotton which is super soft and comfortable but unlike organic cotton (which I also love) won't shrink like mad or tear easily. Men's sizes fit true but ladies should consider sizing up, and the seaming is a contrast seam which looks awesome! Some styles are pretty witty such as the "double-haul" featured above or the "toad-fly" shown below.
Come on in and check this stuff out!

Back on track?
A short rebellion took place this morning when we all discovered how many permit, bonefish and tarpon photos littered this blog. We apologize, Mike simply loves the salt.
Good news though, we are taking over and hopefully we will see a more diverse series of postings arriving shortly.
To start, here is the newest flick from Brent showing his most recent piking adventures. Brent explored some of the prairie reservoirs in search of a monster pike. He found the super tanker, yet the fish would not commit to the bug (as seen in the first 10 seconds).... We'll get the big girl next year
Hope you enjoy, feel free to let us know your thoughts.
See you Friday!

Black Fly Bonefish Lodge
RESTART!!!
By Friday of last week the Bow had changed in color pretty radically. After last night's monsoons we get to start over.....
Bow at Banff: 238 CMS (was 185 CMS) Bow at Calgary: 297 CMS (was 258) Sheep this morning 409 CMS (was mid 30's) Crowsnest 22 CMS (from 14). The Crow should drop like crazy if we get no more substantial rain for the next couple of days. The Bow will depend on how dry ...we stay as well as whether they actually start to fill some resevoirs.

Fishing Update
For those of you who are wondering whether you'll ever get to fish again..... Driving down Deerfoot looking at the high and colored Bow, there are some decent options for fishing right now:
Talked to Vic at The Crowsnest Angler this morning. He says fishing has been pretty good on the Crow this week with the water dropping some earlier in the week. Nymphing has been good and a few more fish have been caught on dry flies in the last couple of days.
Pretty much everything south of the Oldman is in fishable condition right now. Some streams will be a little high but easily clear enough to fish effectively.
The high mountain stuff is getting clearer. Going to be a little cold for a bit but still fishable.
Crossing the Highwood this morning gave a pleasant surprise....a noticeable tinge of green. Not the brown of the last 10 days. I would maybe even fish the lower Highwood right now in a pinch.
Sheep has dropped every day this week and has cleared some. Would expect Upper Sheep to be clear but cold.
As for the Bow, it has cleared a little. Still running big but I know of instances where it was fished at higher levels than now. Should you venture out on the Bow keep in mind, it has a very high flow right now. Wading should be kept to a minimum and if you're in a boat always pay attention. The Bow won't give you a stellar day right now but you can catch a few fish here and there.

Bow River Report –June 13, 2012
Would expect that pretty much everyone knows the Bow is, as an understatement, a little big right now.
It did drop a ton on Monday (about 100 CMS). If we don’t get a ton of rain or abnormally hot weather we should be pretty good to go by later in June (which is pretty much normal)….
Hatches: Caddis
Streamers: Pseudo Sculpin-Olive #4, Silvey’s Sculpin Leech-Black #4, Darth Zonker-Black #2, Clouser Minnow-Black/White #2
Nymphs: Yeager’s Big Eye Hares Ear #14, Bloom’s Tung Dart #14, Jimmy Legs-Rusty Olive #6, Morrish’s WMD-Golden #8, Hogan’s Rubber Stone-Golden #8
Dry Flies: Not likely

Crowsnest River Report – June 13, 2012
Saw the Crow on Monday and was shocked at how good of shape it was in. It’s high (16 CMS this morning) but the clarity is very fishable. I have fishe dit in a lot worse shape than it’s in right now. Be careful wading!
On a side note, all of the other streams between the Crow and Waterton are in amazing shape compared to our area. Would expect most to be very fishable by the time they open.
Hatches: Salmonflies
Streamers: Morrish Wooly Sculpin #4, Near Nuff Sculpin-Tan #4, Geek Leech-Brown #2
Nymphs: Jimmy Legs - Dk. Brown #8, Hogan’s Rubber Stone-Golden #8
Dries: Plopper Stone #6, Berrett’s Mutant Stone #6

High Country River Report – June 13, 2012
High country streams are closed until June 16, 2012.
After seeing the Oldman at Waldron, the Crowsnest, and looking at remaining snowpack for watersheds like Racehorse, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the southern high country stuff is pretty fishable by late June.

There are still fishing options out there. Pike fishing has been really good in the last week. This is actually a Rainbow, about 34", from a Southern Alberta stillwater. Gotta love 5X! |

Reminiscing during runoff
Looks like were going to have less than super conditions for a little bit, so we'll at least post some photos from both customers and us taken so far in 2012. We'll start out with Larry and Carmen's photos from Campeche, fishing with Tarpon Town Anglers, in January......

River Updates
The $64,000 question from customers for the last couple of days has been "how long will runoff last?". Wish we could offer some sort of precise information but it's a little early in the flush to know. Providing we don't get any more significant rain for a bit then river levels should start to drop. If we get heavy rain....restart!
As of this morning the Sheep and Highwood had dropped a fair bit and were not the dark brown of yesterday. More of a middle shade brown than dark brown.
The Bow at Banff dropped to 285 CMS, down from it's peak of 319 yesterday afternoon. The river at Calgary rolls along at a brisk 388 CMS. A little big for fishing. On the bright side, you don't have to back very far down the boat launches.
The Crow has dropped to 21 CMS, down from a peak of 28 on Wednesday.
Not the best weather forecast for Pike fishing this weekend with cooler temperatures.
Life will get better!

All goods things come to an end!
We knew it was coming. After maybe the best dry fly fishing we have had in May (maybe ever!), and a delayed runoff, the rainfall has finally gotten things moving.
The Highwood and Sheep were brown this morning and continue to rise into the morning. The Bow at Banff is rising. The Bow below Calgary has dropped from it's peak at midnight last night but there is certainly some water coming.
If things dry out a little (no rain) this shouldn't last long. Maybe a week where it's a little iffy.
Keep your fingers crossed for no more rain or super hot for a little while!

Fishing Reports
Bow River Report –June 3, 2012
Everything’s still very much “All Good” with the river right now. Color and level is good. Would expect that the clock is ticking, with runoff likely to hit in the next week or so (very late this year). The levels at Banff have just started to come up in the last 48 hours so it’s still a ways away.
Dry fly fishing has been very good with good numbers of rising fish on the Caddis.
Nymphing has been good as well although not terribly necessary of late.
Streamer fishing has gotten alittle better over the last week.
