Fishing Reports

Bow River Report –April 30, 2012

Although there got to be a little more color to the river late last week, the visibility is still very fishable. Over the weekend the Sheep got cleaner but the Highwood got dirtier. As of Saturday there was about 2 feet of visibility below McKinnons.

Reports from anglers who got out in the rain late in the week indicated very good streamer fishing.

BWO’s have been heavier and there have been March Browns sighted.

All in all, pretty good fishing for end of April. Better than last year!

Black Fly Bonefish Lodge Report

Finally getting around to giving a report on Black Fly Lodge, Abaco, Bahamas
after being back for a week........

I've been to a few different destinations here and there but I haven't ever had my expectations completely exceeded like I did at Black Fly! I went down there expecting to fish for 2-4 pound Bonefish all week with not much else to do. Thought we might stumble into one or two Permit if we were lucky...
Not so!

Bugs!

Welcome news for those of us who like to fish dry flies! The above pictured critter has been
kicking around on the river for a little while now with very good numbers this past weekend.

I realize we'll likely get in trouble with the experts, but this is not a Golden Stone, they are
Skwala Stoneflies. There's enough of them around to make it worth while throwing a dry!
Certain Bow River fish have been rumoured to show a total lack of inhibition with patterns like
the Grillo's Hippie Stomper.....Ah, Foam!

Midges on the river like crazy as well. And with the forecast cloud cover later this week the BWO's
should be rather insane!

Don't mean to completely pick anyone out but we do have a while before we see the ever wonderful
PMD hatch on the Bow.

Should only be 3 or 4 weeks until we see the Caddis! Keep your fingers crossed
for good water conditions. Based on the way the fish have been looking up, if we get caddis
with anything approaching decent visibility and levels....yikes!

A little something for your day...get out fishing!

Fishing Reports!

Bow River Report –April 23, 2012

Some of the best spring dry fly fishing ever on the Bow has been happening over the last couple of weeks. With only one little hiccup in weather about a week ago, things have been fishing pretty darn good!

Most of the dry fly fishing occurs later in the day. There have been more midges than we can ever remember. Slow and dead water areas are literally covered with shuck in the afternoons.

Streamer fishing has been inconsistent but good at times. The nymph fishing kind of backed off this past weekend, not being as productive as it had been. The fish are likely only seeing midge larvae in the millions.

BWO’s have been around for a bit now. The first cloudy day we get in the next week will likely see them hatching in big numbers with maybe even some fish eating them.

Hatches: Midges, BWO’s, Skwalas

Streamers: Gonga-Rust #2, Geek Leech Olive/Black #2, Bush’s Witch Doctor, C/H R/L Bow River Bugger-Black #4

Nymphs: Yeager’s TB Soft Hackle-Hares Ear #14, Jimmy Legs- Peacock #6, Prince Nymph #16, Copper John - Black #14

Dry Flies: CDC Griffiths Gnat #18, Wilcox’s Micro Midge #20, Hippie Stomper-Black #14, Etha Wing Dun - BWO #18

Crowsnest River Report – April 23, 2012

Visibility is at about 2 feet on the Crow. Levels are up a bit as well.
Midges and BWO’s are kicking around.

Hatches: Midges, BWO’s

Streamers: Morrish Wooly Sculpin #4, Near Nuff Sculpin-Tan #4, Geek Leech-Brown #2

Jimmy Legs - Dk. Brown #8

Dries: CDC Griffiths Gnat #20, Wilcox’s Micro Midge #20, Etha Wing Dun - BWO #18

Tarpon Town Report

Been back for a couple days now.....and people have been asking about my experiences at
TARPON TOWN in Campeche, Mexico. I spent 6 days fishing with Tarpon Town, owned
by Raul Castaneda and his wife, Laura. This is a pretty cool, and different, fishery.

21

21

Yes, 21, that's the forecast high for Sunday. Considering the way the Bow fished
last week before the bad weather (rising fish, streamer fish, etc.) you might want
to consider getting out there!

A quick post rain/snow report

Went and looked at the river (and did a bit of fishing) today after the big rain and snow of yesterday. River is up, and the runoff has definitely puked into the river! Water was about 1 to 1.5 feet of vis at glenmore, and less once below fish creek. However, was way better than I had anticipated. I'd say that by sunday we should be back in shape and rolling as before.

Come join us tomorrow at Fort Calgary at 12 to try out rods, win a prize from Rio and get ready, Sunday should see the river back in great shape!

Sage Demo Day & Rio Gold Distance Challenge

This Saturday, April 14, from noon until 4 PM, we'll be hosting the Sage Demo Day
Representation from Sage, as well as CP staff, will be on hand to allow you to try out
current Sage rods in single, switch, and two handed configurations.

This is a free event, there is no charge, just come on down from noon until 4.

In addition, we will be offering free casting tune-ups and demonstrations. If you want to get your casting ready to go for the season, now's the time!

The event will be held at Fort Calgary, which is located at the east end of 9th Avenue, right at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers. Everyone is welcome to use the Fort Calgary parking lot and the event starts at noon sharp! Although most of the casting will be done on grass, those who want to try switch/spey are urged to bring your waders and try the rods in the Elbow River.
Please do not bring any other fishing equipment! This portion of the rivers is closed to angling so no other equipment (flies, etc.) can be on hand.

And in addition to all that, we will also be hosting the Rio Gold Distance Challenge during this event.
Participants will test their skills with a 5 weight for distance. Lots of prizes from Rio for winners and participants.

Yah Brown Trout

Brent took full advantage of having a day off from school and the shop, and had quite the little day on the water yesterday.

Water temp dropped to 42-43(which is pretty damn warm for the first week of April) overnight, however the fish were in the best mood I've seen them all year... Lots of fish moving into skinnier water, and eating with abandon... I'd get in the good books today and go fishing on sunday when the weather changes. Stop by the shop, it's time to stock up!

A quick fishing report!

Were you thinking of getting a little fishing in this long weekend?
Well, DO IT!
Went and did a little scouting for everyone yesterday. Water temp only dropped to 44 degrees (so not really at all), and the clarity was just a little down from before (though I was above Fish Creek). Water was definitely up, probably 6" or so..... However, I'd say get out there! I was regretting not having my rod when I did my check.... won't happen again

Pretty typical stuff is working right now, nymphs such as blue wing olives, stoneflies, worms. Streamers like the geek leach, 1/4 lb bugger, etc. Some rising fish if you look hard for them.
